Datadog has released Scout, a model trained to investigate production problems. It runs inside Bits Investigation, the company's AI SRE product, where it can pick up an alert, look through telemetry and suggest what caused the problem. Datadog engineers and a small number of customers are using it in a closed preview. By Matt Saunders
Cloudflare has recently launched a beta Web Search API through AI Gateway. Available through REST APIs and Cloudflare Workers, it provides unified logging, access controls, and billing, and supports bring-your-own-provider keys. By Renato Losio
Airbnb extended its Chronon feature platform with Push Mode and Near Real-Time Model Transform to update sequence-based recommendation embeddings within seconds. The architecture reduced embedding staleness from nearly two days to under a minute and improved offline NDCG by 1.67%, while online testing increased uncancelled bookings by approximately one-third of a percent. Colin Douch shares battle-tested strategies for building and scaling self-hosted observability stacks. He explains how to effectively correlate metrics, structured logs, and distributed traces using open-source tooling like Prometheus, VictoriaMetrics, and Jaeger, while navigating the engineering trade-offs of avoiding SaaS vendor lock-in. By Colin Douch
Microsoft's latest monthly security update addresses 1415 vulnerabilities across multiple products. One vulnerability affecting Windows Shell has been exploited in the wild, while 85 are classified as critical. Affected products include Windows OS, Office, Exchange, .NET, Edge, as well as potentially Hyper-V and Azure components. By Sergio De Simone
Google has opened a Chrome origin trial for the Email Verification API, a WICG proposal that lets the browser confirm email ownership without sending a message. Gmail is the first provider. Developers add form hints and validate a signed token server-side. Commenters question the privacy benefit, and the API is best used as a progressive enhancement. By Daniel Curtis
This article is about engineering an offline-first app for low-end devices based on our experience in Nigeria and India. The interesting problems in this space are storage, quota, cold start, and failure-path design. Our approach applies to any product whose users are on constrained devices and intermittent connections, when the assumption they have a laptop and broadband access do not hold. By Chidi Nwaogu
Cloudflare has put Quicksilver, the internal key-value store behind nearly every request it serves, into private beta as a Workers KV mode. Reads resolve in 1.62 ms at p99 against 287 ms for classic KV. The constraints decide the use case: 10,000 keys, one megabyte per namespace, and one write per namespace per second. By Steef-Jan Wiggers
Uber has introduced Normalized Compute Units (NCUs) to make CPU allocation more consistent across its highly heterogeneous server fleet. By Craig Risi
Anthropic recently detailed how it migrated its monorepo from Git to Scion. Scion is a source control system that moves repository operations to the server side and uses content-addressed storage and tiered caches for agent and CI workloads. The design sacrifices offline independence for less local data and shared infrastructure. By Eran Stiller
Khawaja Shams shares a distributed systems perspective on scaling LLM inference stacks efficiently. He discusses practical strategies for optimizing GPU utilization, managing KV cache memory cliffs, leveraging tiered storage, reducing tail latency, and implementing disaggregated prefill and decode architectures to improve overall fleet performance, cost economics, and availability. By Khawaja Shams
Engineers from Amazon Web Services (AWS) have described how the team that maintains the Linux kernel for EC2 infrastructure handles kernel CVEs. The process combines an automated filter, an AI agent and human review. The team also argues that it needs to move to newer long-term-support (LTS) kernels, as older branches collect fixes that are never backported. By Matt Saunders
